To understand the Indigenous cultures and traditions of the Himalayas, we must first look to history, for it is there that the origins of their beliefs, rituals, traditions, languages, and worldviews lie. History is a map that reveals how people and landscapes have shaped one another through time. It allows us to see how societies formed, how values took root, and how communities endured in the face of change and adversity. The histories of the Himalayan peoples remain scattered and often untold. The stories of those who lived in harmony with the mountains, who read meaning in the flow of the seasons and the meandering of rivers, seldom find their way into written archives. To understand ourselves, our shared humanity, and the wisdom embedded in these highland cultures, we must turn our attention to their past and listen to the echoes of voices that history has too long left unheard.
